Last Monday, May 23rd, together with a photographer friend, we travelled from Tokyo to Nikkō (日光) in Tochigi Prefecture (栃木県). After a 1 ½ hour of Limited express and a 40 minute bus ride on winding mountain roads we reached the ropeway station in Akechidaira (明智平). In just three minutes the ropeway takes you to the observation deck. At an altitude of 1,473 meters you have a breathtaking view of Kegon Falls (華厳滝), Lake Chūzenji (中禅寺湖) and Mount Nantai (男体山). Afterwards we continued on our bus journey to the base of the Kegon Falls (華厳滝) in Oku Nikkō (奥日光). We used the elevator (華厳滝エレベーター) descending 100 meters to the base of the falls. Here you can have a close-up view of this waterfall. In the afternoon we headed for the mausoleum of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川 家康, January 31, 1543 – June 1, 1616) also known as Nikkō Tōshō-gū (日光東照宮). I have never seen anything like it, such flamboyant colorful architectural. The decorations on the different structures are very beautiful. So many people where there it was overwhelming it was hard to take some pictures. The building with decorations of the famous three wise monkeys attracts many camera man. A woodcarving of a sleepy cat, "Nemuri-neko (眠り猫)”, attributed to Hidari Jingorō (左 甚五郎) is a favorite spot. The highlight of Nikkō Tōshō-gū is climbing the 200 some steps to reach the mausoleum. Quit a feat after walking for most of the day. We ended our journey in Nikkō with a visit to the famous Shinkyo Bridge (神橋), one of the symbols of Nikkō. The Sacred Bridge (神橋) crossing the Daiya River belongs to the Futarasan Shrine. This beautiful vermilion lacquered structure is known as one of the three most beautiful bridges in Japan and is a perfect gateway for Nikko. Shinkyo Bridge measures 28 meters long, 7.4 meters wide, and stands 10.6 meters above the Daiya River. What a day, I was so happy to have a comfortable seat on the way back to Tokyo. Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Itoh for being wonderful hosts and companions.
