YoiYama on the Eve of the Gion Matsuri! In addition to the floats on display during Yoiyama, the "kon-chiki-kon" of Gion-bayashi music can be heard and children chant short songs to attract customers for the talismans they sell. On the floats, Gion Bayashi musicians play traditional Gion Bayashi songs. There are said to be some 30 songs in all, some of which are shared by different floats. The music is played with the gong, drum and flute. The Gion Bayashi musicians begin practicing the gong as youths, moving to other instruments when they reach adulthood. The power and enthusiasm the musicians put into their performance heighten the excitement, making the music an important element of the festival.
