Along Karasuma dori, in Kyoto, across from the Imperial Palace grounds is a small shrine that is very famous. On the outer wall facing the street is a pictorial displayed of an intriguing story. The main characters are Wake no Kiyomaro (和気清麻呂), Wake no Hiromushihime and Yuge no Dōkyō (道鏡). The first two are the ones who defended the imperial line against the national crisis and built the capital Heian-kyo in the end of Nara period. Wake no Hiromushihime is worshiped as "a god of bringing up children and the children care" because she adopted the children who had become orphans in war disturbances. The whole Yugen no Dōkyō scheming against the Emperor episode is called the Usa Hachimanguu Shintaku Jiken (宇佐八幡宮神託事件) in Japanese. This is their story.
